In her expectations for morality & compassion, Dr. Esther seems to omit consideration of the multi-generational effects of slavery’s structural violence… Thus, as Dr. Esther mentions “The Golden Rule”, I draw a group of slaves forced to look on while the overseer whips one of their unfortunate peers. What meaning would they find in a teaching such as “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”?
