Again, we must note the prejudicial dismissal with which Dr. Esther regards her freedmen hosts — in these early entries she often refers to them as childlike, impure, morally undeveloped. Perhaps she does not yet realize the connections between her views of African Americans and her male counterparts’ views of woman doctors…
