Such an Offer (Colebrook)

Class, pride, & democracy in the early days of this Northern NH community:

Dudley’s town history of Colebrook gives this story during a biographical sketch of Samuel’s son Sherburn, but it isn’t clear on the date of the anecdote; as far as I can see, it could be either the late 1700s or the early 1800s.

I’m thinking about Colebrook because I’m in residency there this week for the Children’s Literacy Foundation.  Stay tuned for more stories & comics from the North Country!
