1862: A New Hampshire Teacher Goes to War

Fiercely proud of his Granite State heritage, Freeman Colby bows to no one – not the rowdy students of his rural one-room schoolhouse, not high-handed Union army officers, and certainly not those Rebel traitors causing all that trouble down South.  But Colby needs work, and his ne’er-do-well little brother Newton needs looking after, so the boys enlist in a new Massachusetts regiment promising three years’ pay and plenty of patriotic adventure.

The war seems almost won in the summer of 1862, with Union forces laying siege to the Confederate capital and surging into the Mississippi valley. Then suddenly, as Autumn comes on, the Colby brothers find themselves marching toward new front lines, scrambling to protect the Union’s muddy flank as the tide of war turns against them…

Cartoonist Marek Bennett brings Colby’s tale to life in spare artwork and evocative panels, adding dynamic visual context to one veteran’s account of Civil War camp life.
